OSLO, DECEMBER 20TH, 2004: Ontopia announces the release of version 2.1 of the Ontopia Knowledge Suite (OKS), the world's leading Topic Maps application development platform.
The most eye-catching addition to the OKS is the Vizigator, a tool for visualizing knowledge structures. The Vizigator includes two components: the VizDesktop, used by application designers to control colours, shapes, fonts, and icons; and the VizLet, a Java applet that can be embedded in OKS applications.
A screenshot showing a portion of a topic map containing geographic information displayed using the Vizigator can be found on Ontopia's home page. A live demo is available at www.ontopia.net/omnigator.
Another important new feature in OKS 2.1 is extended support for Semantic Web applications. Data that is encoded in RDF (the W3C's Resource Description Framework) can now be viewed as though it were a topic map and merged with other Topic Maps data. As a result users no longer have to choose between RDF and Topic Maps: They can have their cake and eat it!
Developer Licenses for the new Ontopia Knowledge Suite, including the Vizigator, are available starting at EUR 2,000. Runtime licenses start at EUR 20,000. Academic licenses are also available.
Ontopia also announces a new version of the Omnigator, a free Topic Maps browser that lets users navigate, test, and debug their own topic maps. Omnigator Eight, launched to coincide with the release of OKS 2.1, includes a graphic visualization component based on the Vizigator. It also supports RDF and provides a simple point-and-click interface that lets users define exactly how they would like to view their RDF document as a topic map.
Designed primarily as a teaching aid to help newbies understand the concepts of Topic Maps, the Omnigator is also an extremely useful tool for debugging topic maps and for prototyping.
You can download the latest version of the Omnigator and browse your own topic maps, or test it online.
Ontopia AS is the world's leading provider of Topic Maps technology.
